In 2019 the 4th Annual International Project ‘Days of Industrial Design at Skolkovo’(Hypercube) will become a venue for bringing together the most renowned Russian and foreign experts representing the 5 thematic clusters: robotics and IT, aerospace ergonomics, agricultural technologies, biomedicine and transport infrastructure. This year’s motto - ‘Design is power, power - to design!’- is going to unite the Russian lead industrial designers, representatives of the state entrepreneurship, trade and development institutions, innovative companies and the world’s renowned experts with a purpose to enhance the status of Russian design technologies and give new impetus to Russian developers.
The ‘Days of Industrial Design at Skolkovo’ traditionally start with a hackathon for industrial designers and the residents of The Russian Innovation Valley. This year Autodeskhas become a partner of the design hackathon. The teams will have to offer technology-based and visualized solutions in response to the real-case tasks which the Skolkovo residents will have expressed. The support to the hackathon participants during all 4 days will be provided by Mikhail Ryzhov, the federal tutor in charge of ‘Industrial Design’ sector at ‘Quantorium’ Technopark Network and the orchestrator of this year hackaton. On June 29, the public presentation and the awards ceremony will take place on the Hypercube main stage in the context of the event closing ceremony.
The main program on June 29 will start with an open dialogue with a legendary industrial designer in the USSR, a lead developer at Krasnogorsk Optical and Mechanical Factory, Vladimir Runge. The guests will have a unique opportunity to get personally acquainted with the originator the of global ‘zenitomania’ fashion. The meeting with Vladimir Runge will include a presentation and an autograph signing session for the first book by the ‘Library of Moscow Design Museum’: “Vladimir Runge: from ‘Horizont’ to ‘Zenith’”.
The priorities of the Russian policy in design will be outlined during the strategic session ‘Specific aspects of global and national designs: how to earn by inventing the tomorrow’. In the context of this session designers and managers of the major federal projects will discuss the role of state institutions and individual strategies in the digital economy era.
It is going to be the first time when the ‘Days of Industrial Design at Skolkovo’ will be arranged in the exhibition-like format. The ‘Success Story’show room will demonstrate the ideas generated at Skolkovo by using the most innovative design tools: an electric power plant for personal needs, a flying motorbike, a kids multimedia projector device, functional diagnostics appliances and autonomous transport systems. This exhibition will be followed by a pitch session where five Skolkovo residents - Watts Battery, HoverSurf, Cinemood, Sportmedpribor and Electric Transport Technologies will tell how they have used design to earn more money and leadership in the competitive environment. The Design Director of OKTAVA Tula Industrial Cluster,Vladimir Shipilovwill be the curator of this exhibition and the discussion.
The potential of developing the suborbital touristic systems in Russia, the concept of ‘entertaining aerospace’, the leading-edge technologies of building a space suit, spacecraft and passenger cabins design will be discussed during the case-session ‘Private aerospace ergonomics’. The top speaker for this subject will be Nikolay Moiseev, a space suit developer, the founder and lead designer of Final Frontier Design, a New York based company working with NASA in the field of designing and refining the advanced interplanetary equipment.
One more program will be the ‘The Client’s School’, a unique format of a forum where experts in design and managers from hi-tech companies help to establish and improve communications between the Customer and the Developer. The 2019 Topic is ‘Did you want a designer? or How to create a new value?’Design experts will tell about the role of industrial design at all production stages: from the concept origination and visualization to implementation; they will use as examples real cases from all areas of innovative production - from interactive kids robotics to business jets. Among the cases there will be Panasonic urban vertical green houses, interactive objects and robots for kids and adults, integrated ergonomic design projects with passenger cabins for commercial and business jets, and innovative protective coatings developed by Skolkovo resident companies. Application of design strategies in building a personal career will be an individual topic for discussion.
The event-closing case-session ‘Who needs industrial design?’will be a venue for customers and vendors to meet. Industrial corporations will voice their stance regarding their readiness to invest in improving their customers’ quality of life, and developers will share their vision of what the manufacturers want, and explain how to ‘program’ the customer behaviour using design technologies. The goal of this discussion is to answer the question why good design requires investments and what is the basis for its rate of return.
‘Days of Industrial Design at Skolkovo’is an open project welcoming anybody who wants to participate - industrial design practitioners, engineers, developers, customers, students, representatives of higher education institutions and the city brainpower.
