Russian-Finnish collaborative research that scientists hope could usher in a new age of consumer electronics took a first tentative step this month, as Skoltech students traveled to Helsinki to study nanomaterials.

The joint initiative saw students from Skoltech’s energy and advanced manufacturing course spend a weekend at Aalto University for a hands-on lab session on carbon nanotubes led by professors Albert Nasibulin, from Skoltech and Esko Kauppinen (Aalto).
Carbon nanotubes are engineered cylinders of the newly discovered supermaterial graphene, which has a range of exciting potential applications including flexible smartphone screens and stretchable speakers.
The researchers intend to conduct numerous experiments over the next year or two – until they can reliably produce marketable products based on the materials.

Skoltech reached a partnership agreement with Aalto University on the sidelines of the Slush tech conference in Helsinki last November.
Aalto University opened in 2010, a matter of months before Skoltech began its operations. Both universities have innovation as a core philosophy.
