Samsung is going to open an R&D center in Skolkovo. It will have several dozen employees but the company will expand if it proves a success.

Samsung has singed an agreement to open an R&D center in Skolkovo. It will involve in information, biomedical, and energy efficiency technologies and is planning to expand with time. The details have not been disclosed.

Skolkovo fund President Viktor Vekselberg said at the agreement signing ceremony that the time had come for the innovation center to cooperate with eastern partners as the fund had been mainly cooperating with western or American companies.

The center’s Vice President on international relations Alexander Chernov told CNews that Samsung R&D will start as a small team of several dozen people and will expand if the project is a success.

Samsung R&D staff will settle in Skolkovo in 2013 when the center opens its premises, he said. The Skolkovo construction project is slightly behind schedule. Its members were initially to take up work before January 1st, 2014 but the State Duma has approved January 1st, 2015 as the final deadline.

Skolkovo spokesman said that dozens of residents are already based in the center’s Hyperclub area. Some of the ICT companies cooperating with the center are Nokia, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft.

The center in Skolkovo will be Samsung’s second R&D center in Russia. The other one opened in Moscow in 2007 and the company does not disclose information on it. A source close to Samsung has told CNews that the center now has a few hundred specialists that are involved in the company’s global developments.

Job descriptions of Samsung R&D say it is involved in research and development in optical technologies, software algorithms in system software and mobile applications, software testing means, optimization of Android applications that come with Samsung Galaxy devices, as well as applications for Samsung AppStore developers, and testing and certification of applications for Smart TV.
