Open University Skolkovo and Imperial Consultants select Russian participants for the Robotics Summer School.
At the end of July, Open University Skolkovo (OpUS) together with Imperial Consultants, Imperial College London’s knowledge transfer and consultancy company, held a competitive selection process to take part in a Robotics Summer School, which will take place in London. Senior students, postgraduates and employees of university departments in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Tomsk were offered the chance to take part. The School will focus on providing knowledge in the sphere of design, methodology and intellectual interaction of robots and humans in industry, healthcare, entertainment etc.
The contest had two parts. At first, participants were asked to write a motivation letter to organizers at Imperial College London, describing their previous scientific and technological projects and explaining their reasons for wanting to participate in the School. The second stage included demonstration of their capability by responding to practical scenarios proposed by the organizers.
Twenty three students and teachers of Russian higher education institutions were selected. Among them are representatives of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Bauman Moscow State University, Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute, ITMO, St. Petersburg State University, Tomsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University and Tomsk State University of Management Systems and Radio Electronics. They will spend five days at Imperial College London, one of the world’s leading science-based institutions, taking part in lectures and lab sessions.
The goal of the Robotics Summer School is to teach participants the design process, the control tools and the evaluation methods which enable robots to interact with people on an intelligent basis in industry, healthcare and entertainment.
The course leaders are Alessandro Astolfi and Yiannis Demiris from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London.
After completing the Summer School the participants will be involved in the development of a unique training course in robotics for OpUS students and attendees in Moscow, Tomsk and Saint-Petersburg. The participants will also contribute to creating teams that will develop new projects for future Skolkovo participants.
Open University Skolkovo (www.sk.ru/opus) is the second component of the educational environment of the Skolkovo Innovation Center.
The mission of OpUS is to create a system of distribution of scientific and technological knowledge and competencies, to develop a mechanism for creating and supporting a network of active and talented young people at the orbit of the Skolkovo Innovation Center. Key OpUS processes are education and support of network interaction.
OpUS is not an ordinary educational institution; it does not award diplomas upon completion of education. OpUS is a source of prospective applicants (Masters and PhD) for SkTech, a source of interns and employees for Skolkovo partner companies, a source of projects for the Foundation clusters. OpUS intends to achieve this by means of implementing a unique educational program and tutor support for students, and creating OpUS communication centers.
One of the most valuable resources provided by OpUS is tutor support of students in building their individual professional tracks.
Foundation for development of the New Technologies Development and Commercialization Centre (www.sk.ru) is involved in creating Skolkovo centre, a unique one in Russia.
The project aims to create favourable conditions for the innovative process. Scientists, designers, engineers and businessmen will work together with participants of education projects, on the implementation of new technologies in the Russian economy and the generation of world-class competitive developments.
