Opening of an R&D laboratory for Siemens in the Skolkovo Innovation Center will in the long run allow creating engineering spin-offs, additional possibilities for Skolkovo resident startups.

During the opening of the first laboratory of the “Scientific Research Center Siemens Ltd” (Skolkovo Foundation resident since 2011) which took place on June 17, 2013, it was said that the very first project of the laboratory – high-frequency solid state oscillator (its component parts shown on photo below) can in the long run bring creation of a number of spin-offs in which Foundation residents, small innovative companies, can take active participation.

Martin Gitsels, vice-president, director of Corporate Technologies Department Siemens in Russia said at the event in the Moscow office of Siemens that besides radiation technologies for which the oscillator is designed, the range of interest of the German company also includes space, energy and efficient energy technologies, biomedicine (diagnostic systems segment). “It will take us about a year after which we will be able to talk about commercialization of results of this research, and the commercialization structure will be somewhat different”, stated Siemens vice-president.

Alexander Fertman, director for science in the Nuclear Technologies cluster highlighted at the press conference in Siemens that the most important in this project for the Foundation are startups and new businesses that will appear as a result of cooperation with Siemens. According to Alexander Fertman, such projects have a sufficiently high potential of capitalization and chances for success will be high. “Spin-offs of this R&D center will appear by all means, and not as single instances. We rely upon collaboration with Skoltech university in this issue”, marked Alexander Fertman.

Already now the range of device application, developed by the Siemens employee Stepan Polyakov (photo below shows him in the center), is very wide: from positron emission tomography to scientific works where a compact, efficient and at the same time high-power device is needed.

“As Alexander Fertman said, the potential of the commercial scientific use (conducting experiments with use of economically efficient and at the same time high-power linear accelerators) is very high. Among scientific organizations which have already expressed interest for the device are European Spallation Source in the university city of Lund, Sweden, demand is being formed within Siemens as well”, said Martin Gitsels.
