A new 3D face recognition system developed by Skolkovo IT cluster resident Vocord FaceControl has proved flawless in testing, the company says.

The biometric face recognitions system Vocord FaceControl 3D is built upon 3D machine vision, and during testing at the team’s Moscow headquarters last month recognized every single person that passed by in a line of 100.

“The development and implementation of breakthrough and intellectual innovations in the sphere of 3D vision is one of the priority areas for our company that’s oriented towards creating the innovations of the future,” said Vocord general director Timur Velikov.

Investment assistance from the Skolkovo Foundation, plus two venture funds – Leader of Innovation and C-Group Capital Management – accelerated the innovation process to the point where the company could produce such a successful prototype.

Government security services were also involved in the development stage, suggesting the technology will be implemented for law enforcement purposes.

The crux of the technology is in its three-dimensions: Two pairs of synchronized stereo cameras are stationed ahead of the subject – one pair slightly to the right, and the other slightly to the left. By combining the images captured by all four cameras, a 3D model of the subject’s face is instantly created.

The system performs instant comparisons with 3D models of the subject already held in a database, but can with equal accuracy register a match with a person’s regular photograph.

Moreover, the system functions irrespectively of whether the subject is gesticulating or wearing glasses, a beard or makeup, the developers said.

“Continuing the perfection of its own innovative face-recognition technology, Vocord has already managed to position itself among the leading developers of these systems,” said Sergei Khodokov, the head of Skolkovo’s Security IT Systems project within the IT cluster.

“This product has significant competitive advantages over its global rivals,” he added. “From our side, we are trying to provide all the support we can.”
