Cybersecurity company Group-IB, a resident of the Skolkovo Foundation’s IT cluster, has signed a memorandum of understanding with King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) to promote Group-IB’s solutions in Thailand and exchange expertise in the field of cybersecurity.

Under the terms of the agreement, Group-IB's experts in training information security specialists and forensic analysts will share their knowledge with students on a regular basis. The best students will be recruited in the Bangkok office of Group-IB, which is expected to open in 2017.

“An increase in the number of electronic payments will inevitably lead to the increased interest of cybercriminals, while the complexity of IT infrastructure will make companies more vulnerable to attacks. Therefore, using a threat intelligence system to collect data about hackers targeting the region, their tactics and tools is vital to build a strong and sustainable digital economy," said Dmitry Volkov, co-founder of Group-IB, who delivered a keynote speech on threat intelligence capabilities to participants of the memorandum signing ceremony at KMITL.

"As one of the leading vendors of threat intelligence data, we can quickly deploy this system in the region and are pleased that our first partner is such a highly reputable scientific center with their own projects and experts," he added.

KMITL is expected to become a key science and technology innovation platform of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, which will be established in Thailand in September 2016. The institute’s business cluster is involved in the selection and implementation of advanced IT and engineering solutions in Thai companies.

"Global knowledge and technology exchange is a must to develop the digital economy, which is an essential driver of innovation and competitiveness of our country,” said Prof. Dr. Suchatvee Suwansawat, president of KMITL.

“We believe that Group-IB’s innovative solutions, together with the advanced expertise of our institute, will contribute to the efficiency of developing digital infrastructure and strengthen the technological leadership of Thailand in the region," he said.

Cooperation between Group-IB and KMITL began following a meeting between Thailand’s deputy prime minister, Somkid Jatusripitak, and Group-IB’s CEO Ilya Sachkov in Moscow in February this year.

"Thailand is the driving force in promoting high technology in Southeast Asia. That’s why this country has always attracted the attention of Group-IB,” said Sachkov.

“We are looking forward to establishing close collaboration with both the Thai business community and government agencies. Our Bot-Trek early warning system is designed to provide proactive cyber defenses and its effectiveness has been confirmed by leading international companies. Knowing the attackers and their tactics will help banks, financial institutions and telecom operators in Thailand to combat even the most advanced cyber threats,” he said.

Sergei Khodakov, head of information security within the IT cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation, said developing partnerships with international centres of expertise was a crucial step in building a global company that seeks to be a leader in its field.

“Cooperation with the leading technical university of Thailand and building upon its foundation a centre for monitoring and analysing illegal actions will allow Group-IB to expand its ability to react swiftly to even the most complex information security incidents,” he said.

“We expect this cooperation to enable the company to assume a strong position on the information security market in Southeast Asia,” added Khodakov.
