Cloud computing and cloud innovations was main topic for November 29 IT cluster club meeting, which was attended by more than twenty experts from leading IT companies and Skolkovo residents.

The round table was initiated by the IT cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation and its manager Ivan Kireev, who is in charge of the cluster’s foresight of cloud and ubiquitous computing. As Kireev told Sk.ru, the cluster has set a goal to significantly enlarge the discussion on most perspective, from commercialization point of view, trends in cloud computing.

Soon, he said, the cluster will bring together not less than one hundred cloud computing marketexperts, including Skolkovo residents, at a bigger event at the Hypercube building. This time such issues, as implementation of cloud computing in e-commerce, key global and Russian trends in cloud and ubiquitous computing, as well as ways of commercialization of innovations in this sphere, along with other relevant subjects were discussed by a number of big names. Among them were reps of Oracle, EPAM Systems, Teradata, Oblakoteka, Intervale, some others. Number of general directors and development directors of Skolkovo residents, such as Parallels, Jelastic, Comindware, Nginx, Goods4Cast, and some others also shared their opinion with colleagues.

“Connect Everywhere, Storage Everywhere, Work Everywhere”: the slogan, which drives innovations in the sphere. A number of concrete cases were studied within this thematic discussion to illustrate prevailing tendencies. The cloud computing services are relatively quick to introduce, their implementation isn’t that expensive, while they are reliable and have good scalability. On the other hand, it’s not that “cloudless” in the cloud computing. Certain doubts still exist in the client segment about security of the information, like computer system brake-ins, while the virus risk, particularly in certain mobile applications grows, the speakers said. On this background the so called “territorial factor” starts playing quite important role. Above mentioned and other factors make it not so easy to introduce cloud computing in big companies.

Nevertheless, obvious advantages of cloud computing make the difference. The market grows at a rate of 40 percent annually, and in the number of segments, particularly applications niche, the market doubles year-to-year. And, according to a recent Gartner study, five out of nine more perspective spheres in IT are connected with cloud computing. New opportunities are being opened in the sphere of introduction of individual (personal) usage. We might see a new era of “personal clouds”, with personal e-mail, social networks features, work, entertainment, etc. in the cloud. Does this mean that the client-server era is over, and sooner or later there will be everything in the cloud, which can be there?
